Yaw has received multipleawards in his own country, hopwver the beauty of his images has allowed his artto transcend continents into private homes and business in the United Statesand Europe. His many mediums - oil, watercolor, and acrylic paints as well as charcoals, pastels and ink - allserve to bring to life the people, places and things of his nativehomeland.
Yaw was born in 1976 in theNkonya Guan Traditional area, in the Upper Volta region of Ghana. He played inand around his father’s textile and carving studio, which provided a learningenvironment that had a positive impact on his formative years. This experience providedYaw with the knowledge and understanding of texture and symbolism in Africanart. As a child he expressed himself in any available medium, includingcharcoal from burnt wood, chalk from dried cassava, various colors of clay anddyes derived from tree barks.
An innovative child, Yawworked in sand and on canvas, stone tablets, wood boards, paper and animalskins, using paint brushes he made from bamboo and chewing sticks. His art isfrom an African heart. As a great storyteller, he weaves a tale expertly withskill, which makes the audience hold their breath. Viewers of Yaw’s art are similarlystruck by its simplicity, beauty and African ‘soul’ images, including socialaspects of rural and urban areas, and the incorporation of indigenous symbols thatnot only preserve his heritage but also honor the lessons he learned as a boy.
Square i Gallery owner and curator,Marodeen (Walter) Ebrahimzadeh, is sponsoring Yaw for this very special exhibit. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to meet the artist and purchasehis pieces before they return to Africa.
