I am a plein-air painter who just sees things a little differently!
I always start outside, sketching or painting quickly on either boards, panels, cardboard or paper. I am looking for form and color and trying to narrow in on just what is exciting about what I am seeing. Then when I get into my studio I start thinking about the edges of what I saw and how they intersected with their backgrounds. I crank up my music, get myself back into that space outside and have at it.
Almost all of my paintings are painted ala-prima or at 'one go' and often the first painting leads to another as I begin to wonder 'what would happen if?
My painting style is as you see here loose, impressionistic and full of color. I hope you enjoy my vision of California.
Leslie Hailey Hurst is a painter, cattlewoman and olive grower; She
earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington State University and
then raised children and cows for 30 years.; When they finally left
home (the children; not the cows!) she started to paint again.
She is primarily a landscape painter; and found her third occupation
while painting landscapes in Italy.; While there she found that she
fell in love with olive groves and soon realized that the ground on her
ranch was very similar to the Mediterranean soil. She came home and
planted 600 Italian varital olive trees. Her olive company, Woods
Creek Olive Oil and her cattle company, Table Mountain Beef featuring
niche-marketed, no hormone/no antibiotic, grass and grain fed beef do
quite well, offering her the time and space to explore her art. Leslie
currently resides on her ranch in Jamestown, California.
